St John's

On Friday we had a session with St John's. We talked about how to prevent injuries on the sports field and around our school. We also practised what we needed to do if we came across someone who was unconscious but breathing. We practised putting them into the recovery position. Miss Hines was pretty impressed as we were all pretty good at it!
You may also notice that we are wearing a funny looking uniform. We had a loud shirt mufti day to raise money for the cochlear implant foundation. Rikki-Lee's little brother Oakley was born deaf and has had cochlear implants so he can now hear!

Jemma's Maths Work

Jemma has been working really hard with her Teacher Aide during Maths time. Jemma has been learning to subtract numbers and has been practicing both in her Maths book and online. Today Jemma completed some subtraction word problems. She was able to tell Miss Hines what she had done and could even recall the subtraction problems and read them back! We are so proud of you Jemma! Keep up the hard work!

Calendar Art

For the past few days, Totara 2 have been working on their calendar art. Along with Totara 3, we began to study Tapa Art and the designs that are used on traditional Tapa cloth. We had a practice go, using just pencil to get the designs that we wanted. Once we were sure of what we were going to do, we drew our designs onto our pieces of art and then went over them with Indian Ink - which is something a lot of us have never used before. We found it quite runny but fun to use. We left our art to dry and then we stained the rest of the paper with tea to give the Tapa effect. We think they all look pretty cool and you can purchase these from the office.

Special Olympics

One Wednesday Jemma and Sophie went to the Special Olympics Basketball where their team came 4th. The girls said they had the best time and both Sophie and Jemma scored 4 goals each! We are so lucky to have some cool kids in our class and they have a wonderful teacher aide who does amazing work with them.

Rubik's Cube

The Rubik's Cube has been taking over Totara 2 (much to Miss Hines' dismay) and some of the kids are getting pretty good at it. Matt has been super busy trying to solve it and he has inserted a video into his slide of him completing the Rubik's Cube! Awesome work Matt! Your next challenge is to see if you can solve the 4x4 cube!

Tie Dye T-Shirts

Over the past week, we have been making tie dye t-shirts for our upcoming Art Soiree. First we studied how to make effective tie dye patterns and then we decided what 3 colours we wanted to use on our t-shirts. Next we had to wet our t-shirts and ring them out so they were damp. Then, depending on what pattern we wanted to do, we wrapped our t-shirts with rubber bands. The spiral pattern was one of the most popular designs. After that, we put the t-shirts in our art sink and poured the die over the different parts of our shirts. Once we had finished, we put our wet t-shirts in a plastic bag and we left them for about 12-15 hours. Then Miss Hines rinsed our t-shirts and hung them up in our classroom to dry. Once they were dry, Miss H took them home and ironed them, ready to be hung for our Soiree on Friday. We think they look amazing! Come along and place a bid on Friday night.
