Calendar Art

For the past few days, Totara 2 have been working on their calendar art. Along with Totara 3, we began to study Tapa Art and the designs that are used on traditional Tapa cloth. We had a practice go, using just pencil to get the designs that we wanted. Once we were sure of what we were going to do, we drew our designs onto our pieces of art and then went over them with Indian Ink - which is something a lot of us have never used before. We found it quite runny but fun to use. We left our art to dry and then we stained the rest of the paper with tea to give the Tapa effect. We think they all look pretty cool and you can purchase these from the office.

Matariki

We have been celebrating Matariki in Totara 2. One of the school wide tasks was to choose one of the 9 Matariki stars and create a banner representing that star. We chose Waita as our star. Waita is the star that represents the ocean and all of the food sources that are found in the ocean. We decided to create a fun Nemo theme. Ella led the way and managed this project. Thanks for all your hard work Ella, we couldn't have done it without you! Come into school to see all of the classes banners which are being hung around the school!

Van Gogh Art

Because it was such a nice day yesterday Mr B and Miss Hines decided to take us up Arnott Heights to observe our town. We looked at the geographical features and talked about the Maori legend of the two tuatara drinking from the Grey River. We did some observational drawings of what we saw and from these drawings we are going to use them to inspire us to paint our own Starry Night in the style of Van Gogh. We really do live in a beautiful place!

Art

For the first week of term we decided to brighten up our classroom. We chose to blend pastels as our background with some of us choosing cool colours and some choosing warm colours. Most of us then chose to paint a silhouette of a Nikau Palm. They look really effective on our classroom walls!
